Who we are
The Society for Perception Studies ("the Society", "we") runs societyforperceptionstudies.org. This policy explains what we collect when you use the site, why, and what you can do about it. Questions go to contact@societyforperceptionstudies.org.
What we collect
Reading the site requires no account, and we collect nothing that identifies you while you read.
If you create an account: your email address, the handle you choose, and anything you add to your profile (name, field, school, picture).
If you take part: the comments you write, the comments you like, the pieces you save, and what you have read on the site.
If you send work for consideration: your name, email address, the title, your note, any link, and any file you attach.
When we email you a sign-in link: your address and the time of the last message, so we do not send too many.
Technical records: our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs, which include IP addresses. When the site breaks, an error report is sent to our error service; it is set not to include personal details.
How we use it
To run your account, show your comments, keep your saved pieces, read and answer the work you send, send the emails you ask for, keep the site secure, and fix what breaks.
We do not sell your information, show advertising, or use tracking analytics.
What is public
Your handle, name, field, school, picture and comments can be seen by anyone who visits the site. Your email address is never shown.
Services we rely on
Supabase holds accounts, the database and uploaded files. Vercel hosts the site. Resend delivers our email. Sentry receives error reports. Each processes information only to provide its service to us.
Conversations play through YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode; YouTube may set its own cookies once you press play. The newsletter is run by Substack under its own policy.
Cookies
We use cookies only to keep you signed in. Your browser also remembers small preferences, such as how a list is displayed; these stay on your device. There are no advertising cookies.
How long we keep it
Account information stays while your account exists. Deleting your account removes your profile, picture, comments, likes, saved pieces and reading record. Work you sent for consideration stays with the editors as a record unless you ask us to remove it. Backups and logs are overwritten on the providers’ own schedules, usually within weeks.
Your choices
You can see and correct your profile at any time on your profile page, and delete your account there under Edit profile.
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct or remove it, or object to how we use it, by writing to contact@societyforperceptionstudies.org. We answer within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to complain to a data protection authority.
Security
Accounts use emailed sign-in links, with no passwords to steal. The database refuses direct public access, and the site is served over an encrypted connection. No system is perfectly secure; if something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you.
Children
The site is not directed to children under 13, and they may not create an account. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.
Where information is held
Our providers store and process information in the United States. By using the site from elsewhere, you understand it will be handled there.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear here with a new date. Significant changes will be announced on the site.
